The Westark Area Council, Inc. Boy Scouts of America
The Westark Area Council, Inc. Boy Scouts of America was originally organized in 1920 as the “Fort Smith Council” – one of the oldest in the nation. The Council continued to grow and was incorporated in the state of Arkansas in 1947 and now serves 17 counties across the state. Today, the organization feels that teaching Scouting principles to our youth is essential if we are to achieve a society that respects each individual.
The Rogers Scout Reservation near Booneville, AR is the largest camping facility in the Westark Area Council and the closest to the River Valley. Over the last eight years, the usage of this facility has increased by 54% for the Boy Scout program and 154% for the Cub Scout programs. When the Degen Foundation was approached in Fall of 2016 to assist with funding to upgrade their current facilities and infrastructure, a $10,000.00 grant was awarded to provide the following upgrades to the Health Lodge:
• A new metal roof to replace 20-year-old shingles
• High efficiency HVAC system
• 4 PMI XTRA Backboards to transport Scouts in emergency situations
• 5 Replacement Mattresses – Hospital grade
• 2 First Response First Aid Kits – Professional Grade
• SAM XT Extremity Tourniquets
These upgrades will help to ensure the safety of the Scouts participating in activities and provide immediate attention to minor injuries and sicknesses that are dealt with during every even at the Rogers Scout Reservation. The Degen Foundation is pleased to highlight this organization and even more pleased to see the results of our gift.
